About CIED's Faculty Director

Dr. Manel Camps

Manel Camps

Manel Camps is Professor in Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology with a research program focused on the evolution of new biochemical activities, both at the level of single proteins (DNA repair and antibiotic resistance genes) and of bacterial genomes (plasmids, toxin-antitoxins).

Dr. Camps' training includes a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine degree (Autonomous University of Barcelona, 1993), a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology, working under John Boothroyd’s supervision (Stanford University, 2001), and six years of postdoctoral training with Dr. Lawrence A. Loeb at the University of Washington. He joined the Department of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology at UCSC in 2007.

In 2014, Dr. Camps became Provost of Crown College, where he oversaw the development of a new educational program in I&E with the generous support of Crown alumni and of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation. This program includes service-learning opportunities, established through a partnership with GetVirtual, co-founded by Crown’s instructor Nada Miljkovic and entrepreneur Toby Corey. In July 2021, he was appointed Kapany Director of CIED. He looks forward to working with stakeholders on campus to build a dynamic and sustainable entrepreneurship community on campus that improves the diversity and volume of career development pathways available for UCSC students.

Having been a first-generation college student himself growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Barcelona, Dr. Camps is acutely aware of the key role that university education plays for helping provide the social capital and support network necessary for involvement in entrepreneurship. Therefore, another key goal of his tenure as Director is supporting robust and inclusive innovation and entrepreneurship training programs for UCSC students.
